Maine Coon Color Calculator: Predict Silver, Smoke, Shaded, Torbie & All Maine Coon Kitten Colors

Maine Coon kitten colors can be surprisingly complex. A single pairing may produce silver tabbies, smoke kittens, torbies, torties, blue-cream females, shaded kittens, chinchilla-style kittens, or kittens with different amounts of white.

To make this easier to understand, we created our updated Maine Coon Color Calculator.

This calculator helps you explore possible kitten color outcomes based on the mother’s color, father’s color, silver or smoke status, white level, tabby pattern, sex-linked red inheritance, and shaded or chinchilla background.

After calculating the results, you can also save or print the color report as a PDF. This makes it easy to keep the result for your own breeding notes, future litter planning, or personal reference.

If you are new to Maine Coon colors, you may also want to read our Maine Coon Colors Guide, where we explain common Maine Coon coat colors in a simpler way.

Built From Real Maine Coon Breeding Experience

This Maine Coon Color Calculator is built from real breeding experience, not just a simple color chart.

We have been breeding Maine Coons for about six years, and we have worked specifically with shaded Maine Coons for about five years. You can learn more about our breeding background, health testing, and cattery standards on our Why Choose Us page. During that time, we have seen that shaded and chinchilla inheritance can be less stable and less predictable than basic color inheritance.

Basic colors such as black, blue, red, and cream follow clearer patterns. Silver, smoke, tortie, torbie, and white spotting can also be estimated with a structured color plan.

Shaded and chinchilla colors are different.

They often behave more like an additional expression layer over the main color family. This means a kitten may first be calculated as a silver tabby, smoke, torbie, or another color result, and then shaded or chinchilla expression may appear as an added possibility.

Because of this, our calculator includes a shaded and chinchilla estimate based on practical breeding experience. It is designed to give a realistic planning estimate, not a guaranteed genetic promise.

How to Use the Maine Coon Color Calculator

Step 1: Enter the mother’s color information.
Choose the mother’s basic color, silver or smoke status, white level, tabby pattern, and shaded or chinchilla background.

Step 2: Enter the father’s color information.
Fill in the same color details for the father so the calculator can compare both parents.

Step 3: Generate and save the report.
Click Generate Your Maine Coon Color Report to see possible kitten colors for male and female kittens. You can then click Save Result / PDF to print or save the report for your records.

Why Maine Coon Color Prediction Is Layered

Maine Coon color prediction works best when it is understood in layers.

The first layer is the basic color group:

  • Black

  • Blue

  • Red

  • Cream

Blue is the dilute version of black. Cream is the dilute version of red.

The second layer is whether the kitten shows tabby or solid expression.

For example:

Black with tabby becomes brown tabby.
Black with silver and tabby becomes black silver tabby.
Black with silver but without visible tabby becomes black smoke.

The same idea applies to blue, red, and cream.

Why Shaded and Chinchilla Need a Separate Estimate

Most basic color calculators do not explain shaded and chinchilla well.

From our experience, shaded inheritance is not always stable enough to treat as a simple yes-or-no gene. It can appear strongly in some kittens, lightly in others, and sometimes not appear as expected even when shaded lines are involved.

You can learn more about this color type in our Shaded Maine Coon Guide.

This is why our calculator treats shaded and chinchilla as an additional overlay estimate.

Instead of saying “this pairing will definitely produce shaded kittens,” the calculator shows how shaded or chinchilla expression may appear within each possible color family.

Possible shaded or shell results may include:

  • Black silver shaded

  • Chinchilla silver

  • Blue silver shaded

  • Blue chinchilla silver

  • Red shaded cameo

  • Shell cameo

  • Cream shaded

  • Shell cream

  • Shaded tortoiseshell

  • Shaded blue-cream

This makes the result more realistic for Maine Coon breeding, especially for shaded and silver lines.

What This Calculator Can and Cannot Guarantee

This Maine Coon Color Calculator is designed as an educational and planning tool.

It can help breeders and kitten families understand possible kitten colors, but it cannot guarantee the exact outcome of a litter. Some genes may be hidden. Some colors may develop slowly. Smoke, shaded, and chinchilla kittens may change significantly as the coat grows. White placement, silver contrast, tipping, and pattern clarity can also vary.

The calculator is most useful for exploring possibilities, comparing pairings, and saving a color report for reference.

Real Maine Coon Color Examples From Our Breeding Program

Below are real Maine Coon kittens we have raised in our breeding program. These examples show how colors such as silver tabby, smoke, shaded, tortie, torbie, and high-white patterns may appear in real kittens. Because Maine Coon colors can change as the coat develops, these photos are shared as real-life color references rather than guaranteed predictions.

LMCoonCat is a home-based Maine Coon cattery in Riverside, California, established in 2020. Our breeding Maine Coon cats complete DNA screening, cardiac evaluations, and hip screening before entering our program.

Our Maine Coon kittens are raised inside our home with daily handling, early socialization, and exposure to our two German Shepherds. Each kitten leaves with age-appropriate veterinary care, microchip information, spay/neuter records, and lifetime breeder support.
