Following the Development of a Future Maine Coon Stud From Birth
LMCoonCat Winter Story was born on February 5, 2026, and from the moment I first saw him, I felt he might be a special kitten.
As a Maine Coon breeder, I rarely make decisions about a Maine Coon kitten's future on the day it is born. Since 2020, I have raised more than 200+ Maine Coon kittens, and one thing experience has taught me is that kittens change. Some kittens that look exceptional at birth go through long and awkward growth stages, while others that seem ordinary at first continue improving and eventually become outstanding adults. Because of this, I usually give every kitten time, often weeks or even months, before deciding whether they may have a place in my breeding program.
LMCoonCat Winter Story was one of the few exceptions.
LMCoonCat Winter Story is a silver tabby and white male, out of DarMorev MoonlightMist of LMCooNCat and LAPD EndOfWatch of Legendtales.
Most Maine Coon kittens that are born in my cattery eventually leave for their new homes. I take thousands of photographs every year, but very few kittens receive this level of documentation. LMCoonCat Winter Story is different because I started keeping records almost immediately after birth. I wanted to look back later and see whether my first impressions were right or completely wrong.
Breeding is full of surprises. Sometimes the kitten you believe will become extraordinary does not. Sometimes the kitten you almost overlooked becomes the best cat you have ever produced.
This page is my attempt to document that process honestly.
It is not about sharing pictures but about documenting the growth of a future Maine Coon breeding prospect from birth to adulthood. Most people see only the end. They see the titles, show pictures, health tests, or finished adult cats. What most do not see is what leads to such outcomes.
They do not see the months and years of observation, assessment, learning, and deciding whether a cat is suitable for a breeding program. They are unaware of the stages of development, changes, and innumerable little things breeders track throughout a cat's life.
For me, that process is one of the most rewarding and fascinating parts of breeding Maine Coons.
February 5, 2026 | Birth Day
Winter Story was born via C-section in a litter of three Maine Coon kittens. This litter was precious because his mother had lost her previous, so we were very cautious with this pregnancy and delivery. We had always wanted to keep one of the kittens from this litter.
When the mother showed the first signs of labor, we opted for a C-section and spaying to reduce the queen's stress and increase the kittens' chances of survival.
Winter Story weighed over 150 grams at birth and was the most significant male in the litter. He immediately caught my eye with his very pretty and even open-face silver tabby and white pattern.
Of course, no breeder can evaluate a Maine Coon kitten on day one, as only health, strength, and early vitality can be noted at such an early stage. Still, Winter Story gave a powerful first impression from the beginning.

One day old Maine Coon kitten
February 13, 2026 | One Week Old
At around one week old, Winter Story had just begun opening his eyes. Like most Maine Coon kittens at this age, he was still completely dependent on his mother and had very little awareness of the world around him.
His days were simple: eat, sleep, and grow. Most of his time was spent nursing and resting alongside his littermates. At this stage, there was not much exploration or interaction yet, as his senses were only beginning to develop.
Even so, this is one of the cutest stages of kitten development. His eyes had only just started opening, giving him that sleepy and curious expression that every breeder loves to see. Looking back at these photos now, it is hard to believe how quickly he would change over the next few weeks.

February 21, 2026| 2 Weeks Old
Winter Story was beginning to pay attention to the world around him. What was he thinking? Honestly, nobody knows. This is the age when Maine Coon kittens start observing their surroundings, staring at people for long periods of time, and trying to figure out what is happening around them.
Sometimes, if there was a sudden movement, an unfamiliar smell, or a noise they did not recognize, he would give a tiny hiss. Of course, kitten hisses at this age are more adorable than intimidating. They are not trying to be aggressive; they are simply reacting to a world that is still very new to them.
At this stage, his vision was still developing, and he was learning to process all the sights, sounds, and smells around him. Even though he was still figuring everything out, one thing was already obvious-he was a very chunky kitten. His round body, full face, and healthy growth made him stand out, and looking back at these photos now, he was unbelievably cute.

Still figuring out how the world works
February 28, 2026| 3 Weeks Old
At around three weeks old, Winter Story was finally starting to figure out what humans were. He became much more interested in people and spent more time watching us, following movement, and investigating everything around him.
This photo was taken while he was curled up in my wrist. At this age, he was an incredibly affectionate little Maine Coon kitten. Most of his day still revolved around eating, growing, and sleeping, but his personality was beginning to shine through.
Like many three-week-old kittens, he seemed to have only two modes: full energy or completely asleep. One moment he would be exploring his room or trying to play, and the next he would suddenly fall asleep in your arms. Looking back, this was one of the cutest stages of his development.

Oh my goodness, who is this angry little boy?
At around Four weeks old, Winter Story was beginning to explore the world outside his nest. He started showing interest in solid food, spent more time wandering around his room, and became increasingly curious about everything around him.
This is one of my favorite stages of raising Maine Coon kittens. They are no longer newborns, but they have not quite figured out how the world works yet. Everything is exciting, everything is confusing, and somehow everything deserves a dramatic reaction.
Despite his serious expression in these photos, Winter Story was already becoming a very affectionate little kitten. Looking back now, it is hard to believe that such a tiny, fluffy boy would eventually grow into a large Maine Coon cat.

One of the first times I remember thinking, "This boy might be special."
March 19, 2026 | 6 Weeks Old
At six weeks old, Winter Story had already learned how to eat solid food and use the litter box. One thing I always find fascinating about Maine Coon kittens is how quickly they learn. Most of the time, they do not need much teaching at all. They simply watch, observe, and gradually figure things out on their own.
By this age, he was becoming much more independent and confident. He spent less time sleeping and more time exploring, playing, and interacting with everything around him.
This was also the first time I took proper photos of him. Looking back now, it is interesting to see how many of his features were already starting to appear. Even though he was still very much a baby, the young cat he would eventually become was beginning to show.

April 07, 2026 | 2 Months old - 8 Weeks Old
At eight weeks, two months, the overall type and direction of Winter Story had come along very nicely. At this age, many important details about a kitten start becoming easier to see, even though there is still a lot of growth ahead.
Winter Story displayed many elements I look for in a potential Maine Coon kitten. Structure was good; muzzle was full, eyes had good size and appropriate shape, and ears started to develop both in size and type. All of these small details at this stage indicate which direction the kitten might continue to develop.
Of course, a two months old kitten is far from finished. Maine Coons change over a long period, and no breeder can make final judgments at that age. Winter Story had consistent development, with more and more hallmarks that first attracted my eye at his birth being easier to recognize.

Still small enough to fit in one hand
April 27, 2026 | 2.5 Months old - 10 Weeks Old
By 10 weeks old, around 2.5 months, Winter Story had already become very fluffy, and his whole look started to come together. His expression, eye set, muzzle, and body balance were much easier to read than before.
At this age, a kitten is still changing every week, but he was already showing the kind of strength and structure that made us stop and look at him more carefully. He felt solid, confident, and very well put together for his age.
It was still too early to say anything final, but this was the stage where we started to see the first real signs of what he might become.

Winter Story showing early structure
May 10, 2026 | 3 Months old - 12 Weeks Old
At 12 weeks old, Winter Story was already very comfortable around me. He was not the type of kitten that only came over when he wanted food or toys. A lot of the time, he just liked to stay close.
In this photo, he was leaning against my blanket and watching what I was doing. He often did this — quietly sitting near me, looking at my movements, and following everything with his eyes.
I really liked this about him. He had a calm, observant personality, but he was still very connected to people. It made him feel sweet in a very natural way, not overly needy, just always interested in being around me.

Always nearby
May 25, 2026 | 3.5 Months old - 15 Weeks Old
At around 3.5 months old, Winter Story had his second photo session. Just like many young kittens, he did not seem particularly impressed with the idea of having his picture taken. To this day, I still do not know why he looked so serious in these photos. Somehow, every picture made him look like he was frowning.
This is one of the most interesting stages of development for Maine Coon kittens. Between three and four weeks of age, kittens can change very quickly. Their expressions become more defined, their proportions start shifting, and many of the features that will shape their future appearance begin to emerge.
I was very happy with how these photos turned out. Looking back now, I can already see many of the qualities that first caught my attention. His face was becoming fuller, his features were becoming more balanced, and he continued developing in a very promising direction. Even though he looked a little grumpy in every photo, he was actually a very sweet kitten.

Starting to look less like a kitten and more like a young Maine Coon
June 08, 2026 | 4 Months old - 17 Weeks Old
Our sweet boy is now four months old, about seventeen weeks. At this age, Winter Story's structure and general type become more apparent. He is still a very young Maine Coon kitten, but some of the qualities I hoped for are now much more evident.
He also likes teaser toys, which makes the photo sessions easier. Compared to when he was younger, he is much more willing to cooperate, concentrate, and express himself for the camera. It is always an exciting moment when the kitten stops looking like a baby and takes on the appearance of the young Maine Coon cat he might become.
Winter Story has also attended his first cat show. A bit shy and far from the most courageous kitten in the ring, first shows can be pretty challenging for most young cats. I am proud that he has taken that first step, and I believe he has excellent potential as he continues to mature. We are excited to see his development and hope the continuation of his show career will be successful.

Watching everything from his favorite seat
June 15, 2026 | 4.5 Months old - 19 Weeks Old
At four and a half months old, Winter Story’s overall structure and type are becoming very clear. In these photos, you can already see many of the qualities I look for in a young Maine Coon male. His look is very consistent with the CFA and TICA standards, especially in his balance, expression, and overall presence.
His ears are one of my favorite features at this age. They have a beautiful shape, good size, and are set in the correct position. His eyes also have a very nice shape. For Maine Coons, I prefer eyes that are well-shaped and balanced, not too round, too small, or too narrow.
Even when a kitten looks promising, appearance alone is never enough for a breeding decision. Before a cat becomes part of our breeding program, we also consider health screening, structure, temperament, and long-term development. You can read more about our Maine Coon health testing.

The moment I knew keeping him was the right decision
Winter Story's story is still being written.
Looking back at these photos, I am very glad that I decided to start documenting him from such a young age. As breeders, we often have thousands of photos of our cats, but it is rare to have a complete record showing how a Maine Coon develops from a newborn kitten into an adult cat.
My goal is to continue updating this page as Winter Story grows. I hope to document not only his kittenhood, but also his development at one year old, three years old, five years old, and beyond. Future updates may include new photographs, health testing, show results, breeding achievements, and other milestones throughout his life.
For now, this is only the beginning of his journey. I look forward to watching him continue to grow and sharing each new chapter along the way.

LMCoonCat Winter Story
Since 2020, I have raised more than 200+ Maine Coon kittens, but Winter Story is the first kitten I have chosen to document in this much detail from birth. The reason is simple. From the day he was born, I felt he had something special. As he continued to grow, he consistently showed many of the qualities I value most in a future breeding male: strong structure, a full muzzle, excellent ear placement, a beautiful expression, a wonderful coat, and a temperament that I truly enjoy living with. He represents many of the traits I hope to preserve and continue in my breeding program.
His pedigree also makes him particularly meaningful to me. His father, LAPD EndOfWatch of Legendtales, is the final kitten produced by the well-known LAPD cattery. His mother, DarMorev MoonlightMist of LMCooNCat, comes from one of the last litters produced by her breeder before retirement. Winter Story is also the final litter from his mother, making him part of several important chapters coming to an end.
This page is special to me because it is not simply a collection of photos. It documents the growth, development, and changes of a kitten that I believe has exceptional potential. More importantly, it captures the real process of watching a Maine Coon grow and gradually reveal who he is becoming.
I also hope this page helps other Maine Coon breeders, owners, and future kitten families better understand how Maine Coons develop over time. Too often people only see the finished cat. They do not see the months and years of growth, evaluation, and change that happen along the way. Being able to share that process is one of the reasons I wanted to create this record in the first place.
